Now hiring: A Community Animator and Special Events Organizer

Please note: This position is funded in part by the Canada Summer Jobs Program, which means applicants must be aged 30 and under.

We're looking for someone magical to join our little team at Rosefinch Mercantile & Tea Room this summer. If you haven't been to visit us yet (please come!), we're a fully accessible all-ages community hub in Port Medway where you can grab a coffee, browse Canadian curios, have a meal, and (most importantly) connect with other humans.

Our vision statement when we bought this building was literally "to eliminate loneliness in Port Medway" and we're completely serious about that.

We've created this space to be genuinely welcoming — especially for folks who might feel isolated or left out elsewhere. We've put in the work to make sure our building is physically accessible, and we're equally committed to making sure our events and atmosphere are accessible in as many other ways as possible, too. We try our best to keep our food affordable because we believe everyone deserves a place at the table.

The role:

We need a creative soul to help us animate our space and organize events that bring people together. Someone who gets excited about creating magical moments where a 90-year-old and a teenager might find themselves sharing stories, or where a newcomer to Port Medway might make their first local friend.

You don't need professional community animating and event planning experience to be considered for this role, we'd love to hear about your passion projects and volunteer work!

What this will look like:

  • Bringing to life regular community gatherings — from a weekly vendors market to storytelling evenings

  • Connecting with local artists, community groups, and interesting humans to create events that feel authentic to Port Medway but also draw in curious visitors

  • Making promotional material that make people want to be part of what we are doing here

  • Becoming a bit of a Port Medway expert by researching local history, hidden gems, and unique stories — then helping us create ways to share that knowledge with visitors and newcomers

  • Handling all those logistical bits that make events actually happen — scheduling, setup, finding volunteers, and making budgets stretch

  • Creating those special cross-generational moments where kids, teens, adults and seniors all get to learn from each other

  • Sprinkling a bit of "connection pixie dust" throughout regular business hours - whether that's through conversation prompts at tables or tiny unexpected moments of delight

Example Events:

  • Weekly vendor market
  • Story hours for children
  • Singalongs with live music for seniors
  • All-ages Drag events
  • Evenings focused on local history
  • Kids Karaoke Brunch
  • Trivia and games nights
  • Events in partnership with community organizations
  • Other seasonal and special events

What we are looking for:

  • Someone aged 30 and under to align with funding requirements
  • Experience pulling off events or bringing people together in community space
  • A knack for words and design (nothing fancy, just engaging!)
  • A genuine enthusiasm for falling down research rabbit holes
  • An ability to make anyone feel instantly welcome
  • Enough organizational skill to juggle multiple projects
  • Creativity that thrives even when budgets are tight
  • Familiarity with the South Shore
  • A deep commitment to making spaces truly inclusive
  • The ability to be physically present in our space in Port Medway

The practical details:

  • Deadline to apply: May 8th
  • $17 an hour
  • 30 hours a week
  • Wednesday through Sunday
  • June 26 to August 21, 2025

Does this sound like fun?
